How the Egyptians Made a Tomb

The Egyptians cleared and cut the tombs by a technique involving the drilling of holes in the rocks. A wooden plank was then inserted in the drilled hole and when the sun dries the moisture in the rock, the rock splits and they were left with cut rocks. The tomb walls were covered in limestone after they were cut. They were very talented to be able to clear such large amounts of rock and cut through the rock in such a way.

Choosing the Scenes

new-06.jpg (13584 bytes)

Along the top of our wall is the kheker frieze that runs along the top of every wall in the tomb. It’s like bunches of reeds tied together. In the middle of our wall is a niche which probably would have contained a  statue of Senneferi. Above the niche is a double scene (a scene that is mirrored except for the offerings on the tables). To the right of the niche we have a main relief. It is a purification scene of Senneferi and his wife being libated by a lector or sem priest. Above them there are hieroglyphs, explaining the purification. To the right of the purification scene at the top are male and female offering bearers carrying ceramic or stone vessels and lotuses. Below this is an opening of the mouth scene, which is a series of episodes showing priests undertaking the various rites before the mummy.
