[ Research ] [ Papering/Plastering ] [ Frieze ] [ Illustrations ] [ Painting ] [ Results ] [ Conclusions ]
When we started papering, it was a little daunting, because it was then
that I realized how much we had to paint. It was very good to do a "hands
on" activity such as this as it allowed us to really experience mainly what the tomb
builders went through; plastering, painting, fitting all the scenes necessary onto the
wall. We were put to the test, having to get over the difficulties of how to put the paper
up, selecting scenes, putting them up, choosing colours. We came to realise it was a
mammoth task and back in Ancient Egypt where they didn't have the technology that we have
today (overhead projectors) they would have had it harder than us. This information was
comforting when you got fed up with your own work. It was great to get "hands on"
rather than doing everything from a text book and this way it was also harder to
"switch off" and not pay attention in class. I think we all probably learnt more
doing the tomb this way.

I think painting the room was a good experience for the class as
a whole. We learnt about Senneferi, daily Egyptian way of life and general beliefs of
these ancient people. Through researching the tomb of Senneferi from Nigel Strudwick's
notes, we were able to determine large factors regarding what was most likely
"missing" from each wall, which enabled us to determine what pictures we were to
use for our wall, which was missing a few scenes. Apart from the occasional mishaps or
wrong-doing, i.e. patching up our wall because we painted the wrong scene, it was
successful and overall a lot of fun. As well as being able to learn about the Ancient
Egyptians, we were also brought closer together as a class due to the need for
co-operation. Over all a worthwhile experience.

For the duration of Term 2 and half of Term 3 we worked on the reconstruction of TT99 in
our classroom. It was a fantastically different learning experience. Despite a number of
difficulties which we had, mainly not enough time, we learnt a lot. Mainly, how the people
drew up the tomb into registers and worked methodically, painting all the same colours at
once which we soon discovered was one of the more efficient ways of painting, also how
different the same drawings turned out when done by different people. Although towards the
end it became frustrating (as we left everything too late). It was, though, a worthwhile
experience. Hannah
