Madeleine and Marnie recreate a segment of the original tomb wall
How We are Constructing Senneferis Tomb
Our first task was deciding which of the walls in the classroom we would prefer to
transform into the shrine of the tomb of Senneferi. After a short discussion we decided
that the Door Wall (which became wall 13 of the actual tomb) would be the best wall to do
considering our artistic talents and papering skills. The next problem was deciding what
would go on the majority of the wall, seeing that there was only a section 2.5m x 0.5 m
remaining on wall 13 of TT99.
From the Internet site on Senneferi, we gathered that the wall should
contain some sort of funerary procession. We thought this would face towards either a god
or the deceased himself. With the help of Ms Angelo (and Porter and Moss) it was decided
that we would display a procession of men all facing to the right heading towards the
deceased - Senneferi, who would be standing before an offering table giving offerings to
Osiris in a shrine. Above the entire scene following the top of the wall we also would
display a kheker frieze.
After drawing and painting the frieze we began drawing the Osiris shrine
down the right hand side of the wall. Unfortunately when we received notes kindly sent by
Nigel Strudwick it was decided that this was an unlikely scene here. After "throwing
a fit and going insane" we exchanged the relief of Senneferi for one of the Western
Goddess and rearranged a few of the registers and yet again asked for Nigels advice.
He responded by saying that the registers were fine (given that we didnt really know
what was on there exactly!) But the Osiris shrine was almost entirely wrong.
After "more cursing and throwing chairs and tables" around the
room we had to re paper the wall in the spot where we had drawn the shrine and draw in the
Western Goddess.Seeing that we only had a small fragment remaining of the original wall we
had to gather scenes from different tombs from around the time of the creation of this
tomb (the reign of Thutmose III).
Most of the information was gathered from Porter and Moss Topographical
Bibliography of Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphic Texts, Reliefs, and Paintings I: The Theban
Necropolis, Part 1: Private Tombs, Griffith Institute, 1970. From this information we
had a table drawn up, comparing these to the information from Nigels suggestions and
what we thought would bring a perfect balance to the room and our wall.
