Foundation of the German
Empire
* 1871 after the Franco-Prussian war Berlin became the capital of the new
German Empire
* the French war reparations were partly used for the installation of a sewage
system to support the growth of an industrial city
Nazi Era
* construction fo N-S tunnel that runs between Anhalter Bahnhof and
Nordbahnhof
*the Nazi era architect, Albert Speer intended to construct a N-S and an E-W
axis
*large cellars were also constructed as part of the National Socialist building
program, such as the Templehof Airport and the Olypmic Stadium. These were then
used as air raid shelters or as armouries.
Cold War
*West Berlin then built its own supply network
*in 1953 the USA Secret Service constructed a tunnel from West to East
Berlin
*construction of bunkers in case of a nuclear war
