This is where Hitler had his mountain retreat built,
the Kehlstein House or so called "Eagle's Nest". He
spent time here with his mistress, Eva Braun.
A hotel has now been built on the site.
Obersalzberg was considered by many to have been
closely associated with the idea of the "holy mountain"
that formed part of the National Socialists ideals.
Many Germans went to Obersalzberg to see Hitler,
often up to 5000 per day! There was a large "Kraft-durch-Freude"
hotel constructed along with a meeting hall, sportspalast, and a
district meeting hall. It was in fact a place of pilgrimage. This
undoubtedly formed part of the Nazi propaganda machine.
Hitler constructed a network of underground air raid
chambers that formed a second headquarters.
A Documentation Centre was built on the remains of
the former Nazi Party "Hoher Goell" guest house.
The
Centre has exhibits on Hitler as the "Fuhrer",
the resistance to the
Nazis, as well as the "machine of terror",
racial persecution,
and World War II.
The Bunker complex is also available for viewing.
